Abstract

This thesis is supposed to highlight the importance of nurse's role important in the perioperative process, in which every single step of nursing must be planned and divised, whit no omission regarding the information exhange, which often causes negative events. In order to prevent errors caused by health professionals, the WHO, tried to awaken to the safety in the operating theatre after analyzing the data regarding the number of complications and deaths due to a surgical operation. Whith the aim of reinforcing the quality of health care, the WHO, through the "Safe Surgery Saves Lives " program, has identified the minimum targets of sefety that must be met in the operating theatre. Later, groups of experts have developed guidelines to follow, encouraging communication and facilitating collaboration among the members of the multidisciplinary team. There fore the checklist is the procedure that includes all the previosly identified targets of safety. It includes all the basic steps, clearly and concisely explained, regarding each step of the perioperative nursing, in order to safeguard the patient's safety by detecting an error and, as a cosequens, by correcting it. The checklist has been introduced at a national level and was adopted in 2008 by the Policlinico of Modena, showing a reduction in the number of surgical complications. It is important not only to safeguard the patient, but also because it reminds the health professional of the safety requirements that must be met. Over the latest years, as a consequence of an increase of their autonomy thanks to greater knowledge, nurses have become directly responsible for the nursing that they offer, becoming punishable by law.
