Abstract

Diabetes is a metabolic disease with epidemic diffusion and may be considered a social disease. Despite the wishes of diabetic patients to practice sports at a competitive level, there are still now many obstacles and important constraints. Although the role of moderate physical activity in the diabetic patients is extensively discussed in the scientific literature, less attention has been directed towards people with diabetes who wish to pursue athletic activities. Through the scientific literature consulted the purpose of the study is to address the medical and nursing management of the athlete with diabetes through the evaluation of scientific evidence and the analysis of critical issues. The study deal with diabetes in its general aspects: the metabolic syndrome, classification, epidemiology, etiology, signs and symptoms, diagnostic tests, treatment, complications, nursing management, analysis of a standard care plan and relationship with physical activity. The scientific literature points out that, it has been discussed the relationship between competitive activity and diabetes, and the subsequent nursing management of athletes. Diabetes in sports does not necessarily prevent the achievement of important results but it should be treated with proper care. The diabetic athlete need to be followed by a multidisciplinary team that can take care and properly motivate the patient. This solution is not widespread in Italy and it is dedicated to professional athletes. The spread of good practice and resource allocation may allow diabetic athletes to reach high level results in competitive sports.
