Abstract

Purpose:this thesis aims to show how therapeutic education represents a winning strategy to empower the person living with diabetes,becoming aware and self management.
Methods:Through bibliographic analysis of text and articles are addressed the concept of chronicity and its management model,the educational function of the nurse as identified by the Professional Profile(D.M.739/94),the Code of Ethics and WHO with the document "Therapeutic Patient Education"in 1998.It examines the stages of the educational process,and then describes an educational project related to a diabetic patient followed by Antidiabetic center of Modena. 
Results:a review of the literature shows that the diabetesself management education leads to a better knowledge of the disease,a reduction in glycate hemoglobin,weight loss,improved quality of life and ability to self-care.Also is most effective when praticed in a structured way within a team where the nurse performs the function of a director. 
Conclusion:Following review of the literature and direct experience with diabetic patients shows that education has a therapeutic value for patients and for tyhe highly vocational nurse,not only for the scientific evidence proved,but also because it allows the nurse to take care of the person in its globality.Unfortunately,in our reality emerges a difficulty to implement it in a structured way:there is a gap betweenthe figure of the nurse identified by the Professional Profileand the daily work reality.The problem is certainly cultural,and to deal future health professions should be involved."What you resist persists,what you accept can be changed"C.G.Jung.
