Abstract

Negative Pressure Wound Therapy is a non invasive, dynamic and exclusive system which promotes wound healing and represents the most indicated and used treatment in the management of wounds with different etiologies (chronic, acute, sub-acute and traumatic wounds), in all care environments.
Proper nursing care is a positive factor in the management and healing of wounds.  Negative pressure treatment is achieved by the use of devices that allow a controlled and localized application of sub-atmospheric pressure (between -125 and -50mmHg) in correspondence of wound site.
The system, composed of an electric pump, a polyurethane foam or gauze dressing, a polyurethane film and a drainage tube, ensures pressure application which allows exudate management, infection control, and stimulates angiogenesis and promote re-epithelialization.
Although negative pressure based-therapy effectiveness needs of other studies, it has been shown that this system promotes rapid and effective wound healing and improves patient’s life quality.
