Abstract

In pediatric age, tumor disease represents the second reason of death after the road accidents. Cancer is a chronic disease, so it results indispensable to work in équipe, that considers the physical and psychological condition of patients and their families, that must be able to face another destabilizing event, the recovery to the hospital. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the experience of hospitalization, searching practices used by sanitary personnel to reduce the hassle. From the review of literature it emerges that the breaking of daily lives and the frequent hospitalizations can compromise the wellness of these patients and modify their cognitive-relational abilities. It results that the negative aspects of being hospitalized are associated to the symptoms of the disease, being in an unfamiliar atmosphere, not being able to go to school, losing their autonomy; being in isolation rooms. The defense mechanisms that they put in place are varied, but it’s necessary that children are able to adapt themselves to the new condition, resuming a healthy growth and preventing psychopathologic reactions, like anxiety, depression and PTSD. It’s necessary that the health care has a holistic vision and one of the health professionals more suitable to grant it, is the nurse. In the last years, there has been the adoption of humanization practices of pediatric cure, in order to make the hospital-stay less traumatic as possible. It would be appropriate that children and adolescents are prepared to a hospitalization and they’re properly welcomed by nursing staff, therefore, it has been elaborated an information booklet which could be of inspiration for the Pediatric Oncohematology ward of Modena. The national situation has a fracture result, the practices that might be adopted require higher costs to the health system, even if it might be enough using better the resources we have available, for example, first of all recognizing the professional importance of nurses.
