Abstract
The main theme of this work is the knowledge and the management of malnutrition in acute geriatric wards. The paper is divided in many parts: the description of the process of aging, of malnutrition in the elderly and its management, and the evaluation of a sample of older subject admitted to the Geriatric ward of NOCSAE (Modena). This study demonstrates that exactly during hospital stay a great number of elderly patients develop malnutrition. From the analysis of our data, the most frequent causes that contribute to in-hospital malnutrition are starving due to loss of appetite, confusion, diagnostic procedures, and the standard diet. Therefore, in our study we propose the use of a dietary diary as a tool for the evaluation and management of nutritional status of hospitalized and institutionalized elderly patients, since it is rapid and simple to execute.
