Abstract

The American Diabetes Association defines hypoglycemia as a "syndrome that includes all those episodes of an atypical decrease in plasma concentration of glucose to 65 – 70 mg/dl (3,6-3,9 mmol/l), which exposes individuals to a potential risk". The hypoglycemia is a frequent complication, affecting all ages and with important social and economic repercussions; in fact not only major hypoglycemia, but also those symptomatic hypoglycemias affect the quality of life and costs. More awareness of the importance of the hypoglycemic phenomenon, often underestimated, and of the recognition of the quality of life as an important mediator between clinical decisions and results, is an essential step to improve overall care against those who have this condition.
The objective of this thesis is to outline a diagnostic, therapeutic and assistance pathway, aimed at those people with hypoglycemia, where the nurse may fit perfectly with its technical and relational skills.
The nurse is a healthcare professionist, an integral part of a multidisciplinary team, with skills which can be used to ensure a correct approach to the person with hypoglycaemic syndromes and to have a leading role in welfare project centered on the needs of the client.
Through the care of the relationship and communication, cross-cutting elements of the clinical intervention of the nurse, you can plan a series of relational, educational and preventive operations,  and of proven effectiveness, which can control hypoglycemia and, doing this, improve the quality of life of people.
