Abstract

Infectious complications are still the major cause of death in haematological patients. Such patients present a risk of infection that varies in relation to the type and stage of treatment.
The incidence of infections in cancer patients depends mainly on two factors: the intensity of exposure to the infectious and the level of immunosuppression of the patient. For these reasons, the infections that develop during the period of hospitalization, often caused by resistant pathogens, are the most severe and that seriously endanger the patient's life.
In haematological patients’ assistance there are some critical care nurse applicants shall promptly recognise to intervene and allow the patient a safe clinical course. In collaboration with the team hematological, the nurse can identify the level of risk of developing infections of the individual patient, establish appropriate protective measures, assess patients, provide support and assistance to their families.
The nurse is responsible for planning and implementing all those actions required reducing the risk of infection because they may represent a threat to the survival of the patient. In order to aceive this; teamwork is a condition often crucial for the success of health care.
The target is the reduction of the transfer of bacteria and the reduction of risk factors, which may determine the formation of multi- resistant germs. All this can be made possible if you use strict measures of control, if you adhere to corporate guidelines and protocols and especially if you follow the guidelines of washing and hand disinfection.
However, the definition of guidelines is not enough to make a change, there is also need of adequate resources, educational programs and interventions aimed at controlling the adoption of correct behaviors.
