Abstract

Admission to an intensive care unit is a critical and traumatic event in the life of the person and his relatives, which requires the adaptation of the entire family. The environment of the ICU is characterized by the presence of light and various machinery, equipped with alarm systems, which switch continuously and can confound and confuse the patient, especially at night. The postoperative delirium, in fact, is a frequent complication in patients undergoing surgery and anestesia.Il nurse's role is absolutely critical in the prevention, assessment and management of the phenomenon. The literature provides guidance for both the identification of possible risk patients, and on the instruments monitoring of delirium. At the same time, the problem is almost completely unrecognized and under-diagnosed. The aim of my work was to groped to bring out the importance of the problem, through a review of the data collected from the literature. In this way you could provide some indications targeted in order to encourage nurses and other health personnel to work as a team, paying close attention to the identification of risk factors, prevention and evaluation of postoperative delirium. Finally I tried to create, summarizing the concepts from the literature, an easy understanding and application in order to ensure a systematic approach to the disorder. The primary goal is always to ensure a high quality service and complete, that is not exclusively centered sull'imprescindibile stabilization of organ function, but covering also the psychological and relational spheres. The delusion is to be considered as a clinical priority and may represent a possible outcome of effectiveness or ineffectiveness, efficiency or inefficiency of the level of care provided.
