Abstract

The thesis is focused on the investigation of the so-called "geriatric syndromes" (starting from falls, then describing various related topics, fundamental for the mental and physical integrity of the elderly), namely multifactorial conditions that occur when the accumulation of alterations in different systems makes the elderly vulnerable to stressful situations. These syndromes represent the most evident clinical manifestations of the fragility and vulnerability of the elderly, that undergoes a process of gradual decay and is unable to recover, has a hightened susceptibility to external stressor insults. The increase of the elderly population, and the increase in life expectancy, is accompanied by an enhacement in the vulnerability of the population and a higher incidence of chronic degenerative diseases, causing a progressive greater use of healthcare resources and a significant commitment of families. So we have to intervene now, providing more and more personalized multifactorial and multi-professional assistance, understanding and identifying fragility as a condition that modulates the quality and lifespam of the elderly. Starting from that, it is possible to set preventive and therapeutic plans to reduce the non-self-sufficiency; the Orthogeriatrics model represents an example of whole nursing, which guarantees total assistance, at all levels (biopsychosocial assistance), managing comorbidities, identifying patients at high risk of adverse events (hospitalizations, drugs, etc.), thus helping to improve outcomes.
