Abstract

This thesis aims to be a tool for the nursing staff that every day is confronted with managing and taking care of the person who is subject to the intervention of decompressive craniotomy. In the first chapter my study, led by the theme of this neurosurgical reality, wants to invite to a reflection of interdisciplinarity between paleopathology, archeology and knowing how to take care of the patient. Fact that, as the nursing care, provides the link between art and science. In the following chapters the reader will find the most important aspects of nursing divided into major phases: pre-, intra- and post-operative. In the pre-operative phase (the second chapter) I have focused the study on the assessment nursing, the importance of proper completion of the nursing record and how to prepare the patient undergoing this surgery. In the intra-operative phase (third chapter) the purpose of nursing is to protect and monitor the patient’s health and safety, maintaining a sterile environment, supporting the surgical team and completing the documentation. I also reported which surgical accesses are possible during decompressive craniotomy and the relevant postures on the operating table. In the fourth chapter I analyzed the post-operative nursing care describing how to monitorize vital signs by means of careful observation and instrumentation technology use. The complexity of this therapeutic procedure shows the importance of a skilled nursing figure who knows how to deliver a personalized and targeted care, and which has the knowledge, skills and ability to work in a team.
