Abstract

Health care associated infections are a threat to the health of patients around the world; are characterized by a significant economic and epidemiology impact in all countries, developed and developing. Many studies have analyzed the different preventive measures in order to reduce the incidence and improve the quality of care provided to the patient, and the single action of hand hygiene has been recognized as the first measure to control the transmission of microorganisms between a patient and the other. It is also considered a simple and rapid technique that can be implemented without difficulty even in countries with scarce economic availability. But, there is extensive evidence of poor adherence to this practice on the part of health professionals and in response to this situation were initiated various awareness campaigns. In Italy, the Ministry of Health has recently encouraged the adherence to the campaign instituted by WHO "Clean Care is Safer Care" characterized by the objective of promoting the implementation of the recommendations on the hands hygiene "Guideline for hand hygiene in health care " of 2009 and also the Policlinico of Modena decided to join this project initially involving only a few units. In my thesis will present the results of the campaign, limited to the unit of Urology, which are to be considered satisfactory in several respects. The campaign is therefore an excellent tool to improve the adherence of the operators to washing hands and is a good starting point for the development of targeted action plans with the aim of reducing health care-associated infections.
