Abstract

Background :
Reducing weaning time is desirable in minimizing potential complications from mechanical ventilation. Standardized weaning protocols are purported to reduce time spent on mechanical ventilation. However, evidence supporting their use in clinical practice is inconsistent.

Study Object:
To determine the effects of standardized  weaning management protocol on the process of care and treatment of critically ill adult patient undergoing weaning from mechanical ventilation.
To assess the differences between wening protocol vs no protocol and the effects of protocolized weaning from mechanical ventilation on the duration of  weaning, the total duration of mechanical ventilation, the LOS, mortality, adverse events and qualitu of life for critically ill adults patient.

Design:
Monocentric osservational study controlled study

Setting:
Terapia Inteniva Medica della Medicina d’Urgenza of Baggiovara-NOCSAE

Intervention:
To introduce a standardized weaning protocol

Selection criteria:
All patients  which was applied the weaning protocol, which therefore were intubated and subjected to an attempt to weaning

Results
The treated group and the historical control group are similar in terms of age, sex, diagnosis and stratification. The duration of the weaning time increased from an median of 140 hours (SD = 134; 47) in the control group to 82 hours (SD = 67.92) in the case group (t = 2.08, p <0, 05).

Conclusion
The weaning protocol standardized reduces the duration of the weaning time, which is reflected on the reduction of  time on mechanical ventilation without adverse effects on the patient, improving the quality of life.
