Abstract
Optimizing the available human and financial resources is getting more and more important after the enforcement of strict spending reviews and employees layoff. In this thesis work some aspects of this topic, regarding Italian Health Care system, will be discussed starting in the first chapter with the analysis of the overcrowding in the Emergency Departments. After that, a comparison is drawn between two different kinds of Triage: the so-called “Global system” and the “See & Treat” (only for low priority medical cases). This analysis is both quantitative and retrospective and explorative, taking into account the main features of the two methods, their economical weight and also the average waiting time per patient. The data collected (after regular authorization) refer to 248 different reports from the Emergency Department, spanning a time frame of five months, and to users affected by dermatological diseases that were unsuitable to join the “See & Treat” (S&T). This criteria restricted the sample to 161 patients, in order to statistically show how the S&T is effective in reducing both financial costs for the hospital and the average waiting time for the user. The solution provided with this work can be enhanced by a larger sample of patients, making the statistics more accurate. However, thanks to this thesis work, it’s still possible to have a first hint on how effective the S&T can be, when immediately applied to patients coming to the Emergency Departments.
