Abstract

Measuring the contribution of nursing assistance with regard to health services represents a primary interest for nursing research at an international level. In the current position, in which the health services have to face increased costs and an increase in the average age of the population, it is necessary to have a set of outcomes to measure the nursing assistance provided in terms of efficiency and overall quality. The aim of this program is to analyse using literary research what they are and how to measure the results pertaining to nursing assistance, with some examples of outcomes potentially related to nursing. Comparing the recommendations from literature with the experience carried out by the Medical Operating Unit of the hospital in Sassuolo. Said Operating Unit has been involved in a project of improving the planning of nursing assistance, attempting to contribute to research using valid indicators, which measure and evaluate the nursing contribution. The results obtained by the team in Sassuolo partly coincide with the indications given by literature. Outcomes which relate to nursing assistance have been identified but, notwithstanding this, repeating the planning and measurement of the results will take a long time to be concluded. Indeed it is necessary to use a common language for nursing practice, to apply an appropriate scale of evaluation, valid planning methods for assistance based on conceptual models of reference and even more streamlined and usable on a daily basis, to reduce completion times. The road is long and complex, but the implementation of well planned nursing assistance focused on reaching goals, could allow correct procedure in the near future, the contribution provided by the nurses.
